Place d'Armes: historic heart of Montreal
Located in Old Montreal, at the crossroads of history, architecture, and Montreal identity, Place d'Armes is much more than a simple passageway—it's an open-air theater where eras collide. Since its opening in 1693, it has seen soldiers, merchants, worshippers, and travelers pass through. Lined with iconic buildings such as the majestic Notre-Dame Basilica, the Old Seminary of Saint-Sulpice, the Aldred Building, and the Bank of Montreal—the country's leading bank—it offers a unique panorama of more than 300 years of urban development.
Dominated in its center by the Monument to Paul de Chomedey, Sieur de Maisonneuve, founder of the city, Place d'Armes is a place of remembrance, gathering, and celebration. Today, it remains a focal point of Montreal life, frequented by millions of residents, workers, and visitors each year.
It is therefore only natural that the Canada March will begin from this historic location on July 1st. Place d'Armes, a symbol of unity and collective pride, will be the starting point for an emotional moment, where all generations will come to march together to celebrate what brings us together: our past, our diversity, and our common future.
